Aiwa

Aiwa was a major Japanese manufacturer of good quality electronics. In the 1970s, Sony became the majority shareholder. Unfortunately, sales began to decline, and the brand was eliminated in 2008. But in 2015 the Aiwa trademark was acquired by a Chicago firm called Hale Devices, Inc. They began selling headphones and bluetooth speakers, including the excellent Aiwa EXOS-9. But that company went bankrupt in 2021, and the assets were acquired by Sakar International in New Jersey, who sells a new line of Aiwa products like the Backtrack Retro Boombox.

The older Aiwa products from the 70s and 80s, including the Aiwa CS-880 boombox and the Series 22 mini hifi components, are highly sought after by collectors. Also, Aiwa cassette deck mechanisms were very high quality, even in their boomboxes. Their tape transport stability was much better than it was in other boomboxes, producing a very low "wow & flutter" measurement.
