JVC RC-838

The RC-838 is an icon in the ghettoblaster world. Sold by JVC in 1979, it was very well-built for its time. The tuner reception is fantastic for a boombox. And its VU-meters are big, bold, and much more accurate than the ones on other boomboxes. Many collectors install LED's to illuminate them (see the photographs below).

One feature unique to JVC is a spatial stereo feature called BiPhonic. You can read more about it in the diagrams shown below. There is also an "Expand" mode, which is similar to the "Wide" mode found on many other boomboxes.

The RC838's dimensions are 20" x 12.5" x 6.25". It has 6.5" woofers and 2" tweeters. Depending on which country it was sold in, there were different variations of the model name, such as RC-838L, RC-838LB, and RC-838JW.

Does anyone know the difference between the 838 and 838-II? If so, please let us know.
