TDK Sound Cube TP6701BLK

The TDK TP6701 Sound Cube is an interesting, cube-shaped boombox that came out in 2011. It was part of TDK's first (and best) generation of boomboxes, along with the 2 Speaker and the 3 Speaker). It does NOT have Bluetooth. They replaced it a couple years later with a Bluetooth version (the V513), but that version has a different speaker setup that doesn't sound as good, in my opinion.

What this model CAN play is AM/FM, flash drives, Aux cables, and iPhone/iPods (the instructions say iPhone 3G and 3GS, iPod Classic, iPod Touch 2nd gen, and iPod Nano 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gen). There's a leather strap on top to make it portable, but if you want to use it that way you'll need to add twelve D-cell batteries, because it's not rechargeable.

There's a 5.5 inch speaker on all 4 sides. The left and right ones are active (powered), and they include coaxial tweeters. The ones on the front and back are actually just passive radiators. Each speaker can be removed by first using a screwdriver or knife to pry out the plastic trim ring, and then removing the 4 screws holding the basket.

Now let's do a sound quality review. Stereo separation is excellent, because the left and right speakers reflect the sound off your walls, creating an immersive, dimensional feel. I didn't expect it to sound so good, but it does. In fact, in smaller rooms I actually prefer it over TDK's larger models (the 2 Speaker and the 3 Speaker).

Make sure you have the latest firmware installed. You can check by holding down the OK button while turning the power on. Keep holding it down for several seconds until the menu appears. Then select "Version" in the menu. You can get the last known version by visiting the Library section of Boomboxery.
