Sony ZS-8 Sonahawk

During the early 1990's, there was a range of Sony boomboxes called "Sonahawk". They were very complex, very feature-filled, and reportedly sound great, with very nice bass. Some of them even featured AM Stereo. The model pictured below is a ZS-8. It has a CD slot on the front, and 2 tape decks on top. But what makes it truly bizarre is the motorized stand, called a swivel stand. We assume this was intended to allow the listener to rotate the unit at whim, using the remote control. But there are some strange microphones located on the front of this stand, called Ultra Sonic Sensors. We don't know what they do.

Under the speaker grills, it says CCCR. This stands for Common Cavity Common Resonance. Perhaps this means there is an internal bass duct that connects both left and right sides? Who knows.
