Sanyo PH-WCD950
The PH-WCD950 (also called MCD950 outside Japan) was a huge black boombox sold by Sanyo in 1989. It's huge....29 inches long, and it weighs 24 lbs! It can't really be called a boombox, because it cannot accept batteries. It was intended to stay indoors. But it's loaded with features. It has 2 tape decks AND 2 cd players!! The tape decks have full logic controls, Dolby B, and autoreverse. The CD players have a motorized tray, 16-bit quantization, and 2x oversampling. There is also a remote control, and a digital screen that displays VU meter and CD track.
The front speakers are 12cm, 5 ohm, 5W nominal. They are allegedly made of carbon fiber. Above those speakers is a large bass tube called "ZooSCENE Horn" (I have no idea what that means). The purpose of this tube is to provide more bass. Inside each end of the tube is a 10cm speaker. The one on the left is a passive radiator. The one on the right is active (6 ohms, 16W nominal). These speakers have foam surrounds you might need to replace. The bass tube has a rotary "throttle" that allows you to change the level of bass. When you twist it, the passive speaker becomes energized by the active one.
This boombox is powered by two LA4508 amplifier chips (one for the subwoofer, and another for the front main speakers). The Conion TC999 has only one of these chips!
