At 17 inches wide and weighing only 8.6 lbs without batteries, the Zenith R98 isn't what you would call a street monster. But its build quality and attention to detail must be experienced to appreciate. The brushed metal trim has the best finish I've ever seen on a boombox. And the microphone holes are so intricate and elegant. The tape deck is high quality, with keys that feel sturdy and precise. And it sounds pretty damn good for being just a small tone-only box. In fact I wouldn't doubt if Zenith lost money on it, due to all the build quality they put into it. The service manual says January 1982, and by that point boombox prices had started going down, even for boxes with more features.
