A classic ghettoblaster from 1979 with very good build quality.

Panasonic RX-5500

The Panasonic RX5500 was introduced in 1979. In England, its suggested retail price was £284. It's built like a tank! It weighs 14.5 lbs, the same as a Crown CSC-850, even though the Panasonic is much smaller. It's packed with quality. The knobs turn smoothly, and the toggles and keys click with precision. The LED meter can be seen from miles away. The tuner reception is excellent. And it sounds much more precise and detailed than most boomboxes. This makes it great for listening to classical or acoustic music.

The service manual can be purchased HERE(external link)

Dimensions: 478 x 293 x 163 mm
Woofers: 16cm (3 ohm)
Tweeters: 3cm (8 ohm)
Amplifiers: Rohm BA532 (two)
Output: 7.5 watts per channel on AC (and 5 watts per channel on DC).

The model pictured here is a European-market RX-5500LS with 4 radio bands. I think the regular RX-5500 only has AM/FM.
