The RX-6400 (also known as the RX-A2) was probably the loudest portable from the 1980's.

Panasonic RX-6400

This Panasonic RX6400 is most likely THE loudest blaster from the Golden Era (1978 - 1982). Its power output, according to the service manual, is 15 watts per channel RMS on DC. Who knows what it puts out on AC!! In Japan it was called the National RX-A2, which had a Dolby switch instead of a Loudness switch.

As you can see from the photographs below, it consists of 4 pieces that latch together into 2, meaning that you need both hands to carry it. Altogether, it weighs a whopping 46 pounds (20.9 kg)!! And that's without batteries!!

The RX6400 has 8-inch woofers and 2.5 inch tweeters. They are mounted on a wood panel, which is screwed into a plastic box. Fortunately this plastic is very sturdy. It is 3-4 times as thick as the plastic on most boomboxes. The bass is kind of tight at lower volumes. Perhaps some fiber-fill would add some warmth.
