Sony had a tendency to "go their own way" and produce very unique designs. This CFS-F5 ghettoblaster is no exception. It was built in 1980 with a suggested retail price of 72,800 Yen. It measures 20.6" x 11.75" x 5.25", not including the handle. The controls are placed in unusual locations. The tape deck buttons are hidden under a sliding door. And there was an optional wired remote control and microphone (part number RM-23, which is often sold on Yahoo Japan).

Sometimes the model number is CFS-F5L or CFS-F5S, depending which country they were sold in. Some have shortwave and others don't. The speakers are coaxial, with 5cm tweeters mounted directly in front of the 16cm woofers. The LED meters are very long and mesmerizing. The output power is 2x3.5 watts, according to the Japanese brochure. Like most of Sony's early boomboxes, it doesn't have much bass. But it's worth it for the style alone!!
