Universum 8800 Super Stereo
The Universum 8800 Super Stereo is a very heavy ghettoblaster from the early 1980's. It was only sold in Europe, so it is 220 volts only. The styling is very masculine, with straight edges and conservative colors. Shown below are the two color choices: Gray (model number CTR-2108), or black (model number CTR-2188).
The dimensions are 54cm wide, 34.5cm tall. It weighs 9.6 kg (21.2 pounds), not including batteries. That's almost exactly what a Sanyo M-X920 weighs! It's a beast, and it sounds great, with solid, warm bass and a good Wide setting. Universum says its output power is 2x7 watts RMS @ 10% distortion (or 2x10 watts Music Power) when using mains (AC) operation. The amplifier chip is a Panasonic AN7145, the same one used in the Crown CSC-850.
The owners manual (gebrauchsanleitung) can be purchased HERE
This model has a 3-part chassis (a front case, rear case, and an inner chassis holding all the electronics). To remove the rear case, remove the 10 screws and disconnect the antenna and battery leads. To remove the inner chassis, remove the 6 control knobs on the front case, remove the cassette glass (just pull it off, you don't need to remove the thumb-screws, they are only cosmetic). Then simply pull out the inner chassis. You might need to de-solder the speaker wires first.
In the upper left corner is a red digital screen that can display 3 different things: The tuner frequency, the current time, or a sleep timer countdown. If you are interested in buying one, ask the seller to verify that all 3 functions are working.
The tuner dial is lit by 2 lamp bulbs. It is permanently lit when you are using AC power. When you are using batteries, the light does not activate until you push the Light button.
There are 5 buttons above the tuner dial. These are for preset FM (UKW) stations.
There are two small doors on top. They contain the controls for setting the time and the FM presets.
The toggle switches on the upper right corner are for tape type, stereo field (normal, wide 1, and wide 2), stereo/mono, kontur (loudness), and cassette/radio.
