A black, rectangular boombox from 1987 with a centrally mounted XBS woofer.

Panasonic RX-FW39

The RX-FW39 is a very unique boombox from 1987. Its claim to fame is a center woofer called XBS. But actually it has a total of 5 speakers: Two 12cm, 3 ohm full-range speakers, two 2cm pizeo tweeters, and the 8cm, 6 ohm XBS woofer. This XBS woofer LOOKS square, but it's actually a conventional round speaker with a nice big magnet, sitting behind a rectangular grill. The Power output is surprisingly strong for such a lightweight (12 lbs) boombox. According to the service manual, it puts out a total of 35 watts "RMS max" (20 is supplied to the XBS woofer, and the remaining 15 watts are split between the other 4 speakers).

The RX-FW39 has 2 tape decks, an AM/FM radio, a 4-band graphic EQ, and Panasonic's legendary "Ambience" setting. It measures 57cm wide, 16cm tall, and 20cm deep. It takes eight D-cell batteries.
