A rare boombox sold in Germany during the early 1980s

Orion STR-900

The STR-900 is a gold-colored, dual-cassette ghettoblaster from Orion. It measures 62cm long, 28cm tall, and weighs 7.2 KG without batteries. It's very rare, and I have never seen another version of it with a different brand name. Sometimes Orion models were branded "ISP" (International Sound Products), but I have never seen an ISP-branded version of this model.

The German labels indicate that it was intended for sale in Germany, but it was not manufactured there. Orion was a Japanese manufacturer, and most or all of the internal parts are Japanese. The capacitors are Rubycon, the tape motors are Mitsumi, and the IC's are NEC and Sanyo.

The woofers are Orion 6-inch units with an impedence of 3 ohms. The tweeters can't be seen very well because they're buried behind the electronics. The power amp is a 12-pin chip from NEC, with part number UPC1277H, which in this application would provide an estimated 2x6.5 watts @ 10% THD.

To disassemble this model, you will need to remove the 3 screws on the back, the 4 screws on the bottom, the 1 screw on each side, plus a screw hidden behind the tuner knob. You don't need to remove any of the front controls or tape doors.
