Aiwa CS-85
This Aiwa CS-85X is an unsung gem, a true sleeper, because it has the same amplifier used by the CS-880!. It's a powerful BTL amplifier comprised of two Panasonic AN7146 chips. According to Panasonic, this setup is capable of producing 2x15 watts into 8 ohms, if supplied with 21 volts. The speakers include 16cm woofers and 5cm tweeters, all rated for 8 ohms. Sound quality is robust and powerful. It will give a JVC M70 a run for its money. Unfortunately it was only sold in Japan, so the tuner only goes to 90 MHz. It was sold in the year 1980 for a suggested price of 79,800 Yen. It's one of Aiwa's heaviest boxes, weighing 8.3kg without batteries. The tape deck is a soft-touch, autoreverse system with a frequency response is 50 to 14,000 Hz when using Metal tape. And its wow and flutter is only 0.07% WRMS, which indicates smooth, stable operation. Photos courtesy of Instagram user @thulsaboom
