Universum HiFi 1000

The Hi-Fi 1000 (also called the CTR-2615) is a very powerful 3-piece ghettoblaster from Universum. Actually, it is not a true ghettoblaster, because it does not have a battery compartment. It is mains only. It measures 63cm long, 25.5cm high, 18cm deep, and weighs 10.1 kg. The amplifier, which contains two Sanyo STK-4060 chips, produces 18 watts per channel RMS at only 1% distortion, and 30 watts per channel "music power".

There was a version sold by Uher that you can read about HERE. It has different speakers. It also has plastic knobs, while the Universum has solid aluminum knobs for the tuner, volume, and record level. They are the best knobs I've ever seen on a portable. SOLID metal, not just a metal skin over a plastic core. The Universum also has cool-looking round LED's, instead of the generic square ones on the Uher. When all the LED's are on, it's really a sight to see!

The Good:

  • Solid metal knobs (not just metal skins over plastic) for volume, tuning, and recording level.
  • Metal-finned tuning capacitor.
  • High power, strong bass.
  • Beautiful "pinpoint" LED's.
  • 3 meters (power, tuning, and VU).
  • Lighted tuner needle.
  • The bass, treble, and balance knobs have center detents.

The Bad:

  • The treble isn't very detailed
  • The tape deck doesn't have music search.
  • No Stereo Wide.
  • Only the volume, tuning, and rec level knobs are metal. The rest are cheap plastic (and tiny).
  • 220 volts only......No battery compartment.
  • The speaker cables use DIN connectors instead of universal posts.
