Universum 8800 Super Stereo

The Universum 8800 Super Stereo is a very heavy ghettoblaster from the early 1980's. It weighs 9.6 kg (21.2 pounds), not including batteries. That's almost exactly what a Sanyo M-X920 weighs! So yeah, it's a beast, and it sounds great. Solid, warm bass and a good Wide setting. It was only sold in Europe, so it is 220 volts only. The styling is very masculine, almost military. It was offered in two colors: Gray (model number CTR-2108), and black (model number CTR-2188).

The owners manual (gebrauchsanleitung) can be purchased HERE(external link)

Output power when using mains (AC):
2x7W RMS @ 10% distortion
2x10W Music Power
Output power when using batteries:
2x2W RMS @ 10% distortion
2x3W Music Power

In the upper left corner of this radiorecorder is a red digital screen that can display 3 different things: The tuner frequency, the current time, or a sleep timer. Warning: the frequency display often malfunctions. If you see one being sold on Ebay, and the photographs show the clock time displayed, ask the seller if it can also display the tuner frequency. If he does not answer, then you should assume that it's broken.

The tuner dial is lit by 2 lamp bulbs. It is permanently lit when you are using AC power. When you are using batteries, the light does not activate until you push the Light button.

There are 5 buttons above the tuner dial. These are for preset FM (UKW) stations.

There are two small doors on top. They contain the controls for setting the time and the FM presets.

These switches are for tape type, stereo field (normal, wide 1, and wide 2), stereo/mono, kontur (loudness), and cassette/radio.

The Good:

  • Very good sound. Strong bass.
  • Beefy, chunky styling.
  • Heavy.
  • Cool digital tuner display.
  • 4 preset stations.
  • The bass, treble, and balance knobs have center detent positions.
  • 3 stereo modes: Stereo, Stereo Wide, and Stereo Super-Wide.

The Bad:

  • The tuner knob feels dry, slow, and noisy. Too much friction.
  • The tape deck does not have music search.
  • The tape keys are very stiff.
  • The smoked tape door makes it difficult to see how much tape is left.
  • Its styling is not meant for the streets. If you carry it on the street, people would think you're strange.
