Telefunken HP-800

The HP-800 was a 3-piece ghettoblaster from Telefunken. But it was made in Taiwan, not Germany. And GE (General Electric) sold a re-styled version of it (the GE 3-6045A), so maybe GE is the one who designed it. But regardless, it has fabulous sound quality, and some of the biggest chrome dustcaps ever put onto a boombox! biggrin

It has deep, warm bass and clear treble. Not as good as the Telefunken Hifi Studio 1, but better than the vast majority of other boomboxes. Power output is 2 x 12 watts RMS into 4 ohms @ 1% distortion, when using AC power. If you are using batteries instead, the output will be significantly less.

Since it was sold in Germany, the voltage is 220. But there was another version called the HP-1800S which was dual voltage (120/220), darker in color, and sold in Canada. But that version is more rare.

The Good:

  • Great looks, with huge chrome dustcaps.
  • Very good sound. Nice warm bass and detailed treble.
  • Station presets
  • Great Stereo Wide setting
  • Dual antennas
  • The tape deck has music search.
  • Separate Phono and Reserve (Aux)
  • The balance, bass and treble knobs have center detents.
  • The tuner can be set for local or distant.
  • Storage compartment for the AC cable
  • The LED meter can measure either VU or Tuning/Battery

The Bad:

  • The LED meter is hard to see during the day.
  • The knobs are very small and plastic.
  • The speaker cases are plastic. You should consider adding Dynamat inside to eliminate resonance.
  • The On/Off switch often fails, forcing you to use the Sleep button instead.

Tip: If your tape drive belts are broken, and they broke while a tape was playing, the motor will keep running permanently. If you want to stop the motor, and you are too lazy to replace the belts, insert a plug into the Fernbed. (remote) and Left Mikrofon jacks. This will stop the motor and prevent it from running. OR, you could disassemble the main unit (3 screws on each side, and 1 on the bottom), reach behind the tape deck and put your finger on the main pulley, and turn it until the deck "resets" with a click. This will release the heads and unlock the door.
