Review of the Philips AZ-2555 boombox with WOOX, introduced in the year 2001.

Philips AZ2555

The AZ2555 was introduced in 2001, according to the date on the service manual....and manufactured for at least 2 more years after that. It seems like Philips' answer to the JVC Kaboom. It's smaller and less powerful, but it still kicks out some healthy bass. There are only two 4-inch speakers, but they have rubber surrounds and big magnets, enabling them to move a lot of air. That air has to go somewhere, and it goes through the bass ports on the back, AND it vibrates a passive radiator mounted prominently on the front for all to see. This radiator is called WOOX, and it has a dual surround (silicone on the outside, and foam on the inside). It sits in a sealed chamber where it is pressurized by the right speaker.

It has an AM/FM radio tuner, CD player, and Aux input jacks. It also has a USB port, but flash drives don't work with it. It's only intended for streaming music from your Windows PC (and to do so, you have to use Philips' clunky MusicMatch software). The bass, mids, and treble can be adjusted via buttons on the LCD panel. Each can be adjusted in 10 steps from -5 to +5. The WOOX button just adds a bit more bass on top of +5. I guess you could call it a +7.
