One of the rarest boomboxes ever, the Crown RX-9800 looks like a James Bond suitcase!

Crown RX-9800

One of the rarest boomboxes ever. In my 8 years of collecting, I have heard only 5 or 6 people say they own one. None have appeared on Ebay to my knowledge.

It was sold in Japan only, was very expensive (110,000 yen), and possessed better build quality than the other models from Crown. No advertisements have ever been found for it. Some people have speculated that it was never sold in retail stores, and that instead, it was sold to business owners to give to their travelling salespeople. Who knows?

From the outside it looks like a generic briefcase, and nobody will know there's a radio inside.

You would have to look closely to see the antenna tip, the microphone vents, the power button, and the headphone port.

In the back is a flap covering the battery compartment.

The build quality is very good. The tape deck has music search, Metal tape compatibility, a metal back-plate, and very nice-feeling keys.

In English, this translates to: "Do not leave it in the sun inside a car. High temperatures might affect the material and shape of the cabinet. For service and questions, please call 0484 (64) 7343."

In English, this translates to: "When the batteries are not in use for more than one month, take them out"

These 3 toggle switches are for:
"Mode 2" (Stop/Recovery, Memory, Music Search)
"Tape Type" (Metal, Chrome, Normal)
"Mode/OSC" (Wide/OSC2, Stereo/OSC1, Battery Level/Tuner Light)

These knobs are for Mic Mixing, Tone, Balance, and Volume. The digital display is for the tape music search.

These switches are:
"Interchange" (FM wireless mixing, Radio, Tape).
"FM Muting" (Out, In)
"Radio Bands" (MW, SW, FM)
It also has a lighted tuner needle, which is a nice touch.

It also has a 20 second voice recorder! That's right, it has a roll of blank tape inside (like an analog answering machine), with its own recording head (separate from the main tape player). Thus making the rumor that it was sold to businessmen more believable.

Here we see the headphone port, external speaker ports, and the voice recorder switch.

Here we see the mixing microphone ports, the left and right microphone ports, and the aux input ports.
