Crown CSC-850

The CSC850 was a very popular ghettoblaster from Crown. It was sold in 1981, available in silver or gray. It's got huge metal knobs, big meters, 20cm deep-dish woofers, and thick chrome rings. Its dimensions are 59x36x16 cm. It is one of the only boomboxes without a handle. Instead, it has chrome loops for a shoulder strap.

It's a great sounding box, but beware: I have owned 9 or 10 Crowns, and 5 or 6 of them had a strange problem. They made a loud, continuous static noise when powered on, for 30-60 seconds before gradually disappearing. Sometimes it never went away, it merely changed into a soft motor-boarding sound. I suspect this might be caused by bad capacitors or bad solder joints.

The 850 produces excellent bass, clear highs, and a well-rounded mellow sound. The Wide setting is nice too. This is a great box to listen too indoors. When outdoors, it will get beaten by a JVC M70.

Be aware, there are two different versions of this model. One is called the CSC-850F, and the other is called the CSC-850L. I think the "L" means luxury, ha ha. It has more features than the "F". It has real metal knobs. Look at the picture below. The knob on the right has a real metal shell. The other one is just plastic.

The metal knobs are so much nicer. They have a texture that makes them easy to grip.

Another difference is that the "L" model has a tape-type switch. See the toggle-switch on the left? The "F" does not have that.

Also, the L model has an AFC button. The F model does not.

According to Crown, its power output is 3.2 watts per channel (minimum) from 100 Hz to 20 kHz, into 4 ohms and no more than 10% THD. Remember, that's only the minimum, so the maximum is undoubtedly higher (I'm guessing 5-6 watts per channel). The power is supplied by a single Panasonic AN7145M amplifier chip.

There is an upgraded version of this model called the Crown CSC-980, which is gold with square grills, different speakers, deeper bass, plus Dolby and FM presets.
